Six Point Brownstone Ale

Six Point is one of our favorite brewers here in NY, and they do not disappoint with the Brownstone Ale.
This is probably one of the more complex brown ales we’ve tried, and it’s got the perfect balance of nuttiness and sweetness. We also enjoyed the Brownstone’s relatively low ABV, which should allow for plenty of time to experience all this beer has to offer.

Beer of the Week: Scotch Silly

How could you NOT want one of these after just reading the name? The product of a recent Tap That “researching” foray, Scotch Silly was recommended to me by the bartender at Resto. This recommendation was quickly seconded by The Girl To My Left. Both have my gratitude. This beer was fantastic, and really put me in a great mood for the rest of the day. Ah, mood-altering chemicals, where would I be without you? Probably rich and successful.
Scotch Silly is somewhat Scottish and not at all silly, it’s …

Ballantine Burton Ale

This traditional English ale is hand-pumped into the glass straight from the cask. Like most cask ales, Burton is lower in carbonation, making it smooth and easy to drink. It’s also served at a slightly warmer temperature that brings out the beer’s more subtle flavors.

Spezial Rauchbier

If you’re going to try a rauchbier, why not have one from the oldest rauchbier brewer in Germany? Rauchbier is German for smoked beer, and it’s made with malts that have been smoked over a beechwood fire, giving the beer a distinct, smokey accent. Some rauchbiers are stronger than others, but we think you’ll find Spezial’s Rauchbier Lager surprisingly mild and delicious.

‘t Gaverhopke Extra

While we we think you’ll enjoy everything this Belgian brewery, we especially enjoy the Extra. It combines the best of both the strong ale and sour ale varieties. There’s a whole lot going on with this beer, and you’ve really got to try it for yourself. You’ll find it incredibly drinkable considering the beer’s 12% ABV.

Mikkeller Black Hole

This big, dark imperial stout clocks in at a whopping 13.5% ABV, making it perfect for sipping with a friend on a cold winter night (or day, we really don’t discriminate here). While many stouts have a coffee-like flavor to them, the Black Hole is actually brewed with coffee. You’ll definitely detect the distinct bitter, roasty flavor, but this beer is also nicely balanced with plenty of sweetness. Give this one some time, we find it gets even better as it warms in the glass.

Keegan Ales Mother’s Milk

Mother’s Milk is an Oaltmeal Milk Stout from Keegan Ales. This beer is much lighter and slightly sweeter than other stouts you may have tried, which is to be expected from the oatmeal stout style, but it still has great stout flavors. Another bonus: Mother’s Milk has a much lower ABV than your average stout, so feel free to enjoy this one all night.

Giant is an Imperial Stout from the Great Adirondack Brewing Company that is aged in bourbon barrels. This technique gives the beer a slight bourbon taste on top of an already impressively complex beer. This is a strong beer, clocking in at around 11-12% ABV, but Adirondack did a great job balancing the beer’s strength with sweet flavors.

Keegan Ales Jo Momma

Another stout from Keegan Ales, Jo Momma falls under the Imperial style of stouts – meaning that it has a stronger flavor and higher alcohol content than other stouts. We were surprised with how wonderfully drinkable this beer is – at 8% ABV it is on the lighter side of the imperial style, but still packs a punch. There’s a reason this beer won Best Beer at the TAP NY festival.

Ithaca Beer Brute

This American Wild Ale from the Ithaca Beer Company is simply amazing. Sweet, sour, fruit, and citrus flavors are all nicely balanced, making for a delicious and incredibly drinkable beer. At 7% ABV, this beer is stronger than it appears while still having refreshing, thirst-quenching character.
